The hike to the highest point in OZ!

Well the weather forecast wasn’t the best, but we still attempted to hike from Friday Flats to top of Mt Kosciuszko. The mission started with Max, Massimo, Yuli, Karina and I as we attempted to reach the peak. Our estimate was it would take about 5 hrs to reach the peak. So we set off with our lunches bought from sundance and lots of energy.

Tn_100_0729 For the climb up we used the Merrits Nature Trail to get to the top. There were a lot of nice views through the valley. Its weird being here when there is no snow around. It makes you appreciate nature a bit. Also it gives us a view of whats under the snow. Tn_100_0732 Tn_100_0741 Tn_100_0753 Tn_100_0764 Tn_100_0766

I Never expected there to be that many rocks and boulders under the snow here. I was expecting grass from top to bottom with the occasional rocks.

This time of the year the weather was ever changing, near the top of the walk it got a bit steeper and the snow had accumulated already. If only there was a little more I would have brought the snowboard. We went pass the famous picnic table that people jump off in winter. Might try it this year.

After about 1hr 30 minutes of going up and passing a lot of bewildered people walking down, we reached Eagles Nest. Massimo was very tired and looking like a good hot coffee or chocolate would help his tired body. So we stopped, luckily cause the wind was houling and the temperatures had dropped. Seemed like a typical day at thredbo in winter! but this was Autumn!

Tn_100_0761 As the sign read, the walk up was closed to people who didn’t bring sub artic hiking gear. So our plan of attack now was to head back down and into town to get a good meal and maybe organise our bikes for tomorrow. Our walk to the summit had been thwarted. DAMN!

Now for the decent, what way should we go, our decision, straight down the super trail! Tn_100_0776 Tn_100_0779The thinking was it would be easier, but walking down a steep hill that is uneven really hurts. We found that out. Luckily we all made it down safely. But Max and Karina almost fell down into a wombat hole.

Have you ever just been in some strange place and just bumped into someone you know? well as we were walking down I was at the back of the pack enjoying the view, and we saw people ahead. Which was followed by the casual greetings of "how you going? is it far to go?". As I walked further ahead, it turned out to be my cousin and auntie from canberra walking up as well! Stanger place to meet up.

After casually catching up, we proceeded back down and back to Jindy. Driving back we bumped into some local wildlife. Tn_100_0786_1 What a nice day, shame never reached the peak but still have a lot of time to achieve that goal.
