Land speed record

Thursday, December 29th, 2005

Went for a nice little bike ride from my place to the city, took me 40 mins to ride the 16km route, seems pretty slow hey. damn must try harder next time. But what i did manage to do was clock 60km/ph on the bike in 1 section.

It was a rush and a half, flying down the hill overtaking cars. If you have seen the condition of my bike you may know that its a feat just staying straight so i’m super stoked about this.

Anyway, i will try and go faster another time. Check out the picture of my speedo.

Like they say, Adventure Races are on Rain, hail or shine. But what happens if it all happens during the course of the event? Well I entered another adventure race last weekend held at Narrabeen and we experienced all the different conditions in just the short time we were participating in the race.

Started out Pouring rain, with lighting and a bit of thunder, then mid race the sun came out and it was scorching hot, and I started to pray for rain as my water was running low. Prays were answered, because the rain came, but so did the hail, and boy did it come down. Bringing back memories of those childhood days of splashing around in the deep puddles, caked in mud.

In between the crazy weather, we were in an adventure race, and besides running through puddles, we went swimming in a lake and at the beach, ran around a golf course, went mountain biking up some steep hills, navigated through the many streets and trails around Narrabeen.

But I think the favourite thing out of it all must have been the down hill mountain bike sections, and the discovery of a new sport. Mountain Bike Walking. This is where you haul your bike up some ridiculously steep trail on your shoulder or push it around UP the trail. No need for peddling!

Physically, I think this race was pretty tough, a lot tougher than all the other ones, because of the hills, and hills, oh did I mention the hills on this course? However we pushed through the pain barrier and also the additional running we had to do because we left some mandatory equipment at the bikes.

Finally we saw the finish line, running as fast as we could to the cheers and encouragement of all the teams. It was an awesome feeling completing another adventure race, which seemed to be one of the tougher ones, but it always makes for great stories later, and also it gave a great sense of achievement. Mainly that you could still go out on a Friday night, and then wake up at a really stupid hour on the Saturday and enter and complete an Adventure race. So onto the next Adventure Race.

Let it snow let it snow!

Well its not long before my journey to the land of the rising sun, and i get more and more excited everyday. Here is the latest news from where I am heading. If anyone will be around should meet up and we can go for a ride.

Weather conditions: Snowing Heavily
New snowfall: 10-15cm
Snow depth: 2.10m upper mountain, 1.35m in the village.
Yesterday the morning snowfall cleared to a fine afternoon making turns in the fresh powder all the more enjoyable with views to Mt Yotei and beyond. With not a breath of wind and clear skies the temperature plummeted to -21 last night in Kutchan. In the early hours of this morning though the snow has returned and it is currently snowing heavily again.

A little update on the snowfall back on the 11th. Found out that we actually received about a metre of snow that day making it the heaviest single day snowfall in the last 10 years. No wonder the snow clearers couldn’t keep up!

Just a word on why my reported snowdepth varies somewhat from the official snowdepth. I know in most ski resorts in the world the main problem is that official depths are often misleading in that they overstate things. In Niseko I get the feeling they do the opposite. Just this last week we had close to 2.0m of snow fall and this was on top of a 1.4m base. Now even allowing for a fair amount of compaction the official depth of only 1.75m seems unlikely. The official depth may be a reasonable indicator of the depth on piste where there is a lot of compaction but I believe my reported snowdepth is a better indicator of the off-piste depth.
